Ciao Ontake Mount Resort is located on the northern slopes of Mt Ontake in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Mt Ontake is the 14th highest mountain and second highest volcano in Japan. This ski area was known as Ciao Ontake Snow Resort until 2018. The base of the resort is located at an altitude of 1,810m with the summit reaching 2,190m - an 8 person gondola lift goes from base to summit. The resort has been closed since 2018 and the facilities remain in place.

Further Information

  • Ciao Ontake Mount Resort was initially known as Ciao Ontake Snow Resort  チャオ御岳スノーリゾート
     
  • The name was changed to Ciao Ontake Mount Resort in 2018
     
  • The 8-person gondola went from base to summit, covering all of the ski runs
     
  • There was also three pair lifts
     
  • In later seasons, one of the pair lifts was rested
     
  • Visitor numbers dropped in the 2014 season due to a nearby volcanic eruption of Mt Ontake
     
  • In July 2017, the resort announced that it would be closed for the 2017-2018 season...
     
  • ...but in September, it then announced that it would indeed be operating
     
  • However, it only opened on weekends and holidays between 9th January and 16th March 2018
     
  • After an official delay to the start of the next season, the ski area ended up being closed for 2018-2019
     
  • Despite various rumours every year, Ciao Ontake Mount Resort remains closed in late 2022
     
  • The location was visited in October 2022
     
  • The ski area facilities are all still in place, even including chairs hanging on the ski lifts
     
  • There is a 'woodchip running course' around the base area
     
  • That is part of the Hida Ontake Kogen Highland Training Area 飛騨御岳高原高地撮トレーニングエリア
     
  • A sign and short pathway by the side of the road leads to the base
     
  • There were no signs requesting no entry and so a few photographs from around the base were taken
