Oishida Choei Satoyama was a ski area located in Oishida Town in the northern region of Yamagata Prefecture. Choei means ‘operated by the town’. This ski area was often just known as Satoyama. One pair lift operated at Satoyama but it operated at a loss before closing for good on 12th March 2013. During the last season open, people could ride the lift for free.

Further Information

  • Oishida Choei Satoyama opened in 1994 and was operated by the town, hence the name
    　
  • The ski area was only open for night skiing on weekdays (from 5pm until 9pm), at least in later years of operation
    　
  • It had one 286m pair lift
    　
  • On weekends and holidays, it was open from 9am until 9pm
    　
  • In its best year, the ski area generated revenue of 7,000,000 yen
    　
  • In the last years of operation, that was down to just 1,000,000 yen
    　
  • The town announced that the ski area operated with a deficit of over 10,000,000 yen each year
    　
  • If it were to remain open, costly maintenance work was going to be required on facilities
    　
  • In December 2012, it was announced that the ski area would be closed at the end of the 2012-2013 season
    　
  • As a thank you, lift tickets were free during the last season
    　
  • Oishida Choei Satoyama closed on 12th March 2013
    　
  • The lift remains in place, but the base building has been removed
