Echigo Axiom

Echigo Axiom was a ski area located in the northern region of Uonuma City in Niigata Prefecture, about 9km from the central town area of Koide. It was originally known as Gongendo, named after the mountain on whose north-western base it can be found - Shimogongendozan. It was often just known as Axiom. Echigo Axiom was particularly popular with snowboarders due to having two half-pipes and holding various related events. A quad lift going from the base area to the summit was planned but was never built. Echigo Axiom closed in 2002.

Further Information

  • Axiom was originally known as Gongendo  権現堂スキー場
    　
  • It started off with just one lift
    　
  • It expanded to have four pair lifts along with two rope tows at base
    　
  • Axiom had 120m and 80m half-pipes and was particularly popular with snowboarders
    　
  • A striking green, white and red roofed restaurant building was located off to the right hand side of the base area
    　
  • At the time of the above photos being taken it looked like the building was about to be demolished
    　
  • A quad lift going from that location to the summit was planned but never materialised
    　
  • Even so, the planned quad lift can be seen on the course map on the information board outside the restaurant building (see above photos)
    　
  • The large Kamiyu Onsen hot springs facility is just a five minute walk from the base
    　
  • That unrelated facility is still operating

By the side of Prefecture Road 70, about 1km off Route 252 to the north-east of Koide.
About 9km from the Koide IC exit and 11.5km from the Horinouchi IC exit of the Kanetsu Expressway.
About 1km from Uonuma Tanaka Station on the Tadami line.
