Yamamotoyama Kogen

Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture

小千谷山本山高原スキー場
新潟県小千谷市

Ojiya Yamamotoyama Kogen was a ski area located a few kilometres to the south of the central area of Ojiya City in Niigata Prefecture. The main lower main area was serviced by a quad lift and was open daily for night time operations. The top area was wide open and gentle, serviced by a simple J-bar lift. This region of Niigata was shaken by the powerful Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake in October 2004. The ski area was not able to open beyond that date and officially closed in 2006.

Further Information

  • It appears that there was some kind of ski jump and various events were held at this location dating back to the 1930s

  • Ojiya Yamamotoyama Kogen officially became a ski area when the lower quad lift was installed in 1988

  • An additional side course through the trees back down to the main base was added soon after

  • The lower section was the main base of the ski area

  • Floodlit night time skiing with the quad lift operating was popular

  • At one time it was open until 11pm on Saturday nights and until 9pm on weekdays

  • The lifts and slopes were always closed between 5pm and 6pm for grooming

  • The catchphrase used by the ski area was  夜滑  ('night gliding'), emphasizing the floodlit night operations

  • It was popular with locals and there was also a shuttle bus back to the train station at the end of the evening

  • There was also parking at the top of the hill

  • The top area offered wide-open and gentle slopes and was serviced by a simple J-bar lift

  • The Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake  新潟県中越地震  on 23rd October 2004 caused damage to some facilities and the ski area was not able to open after that

  • Ojiya Yamamotoyama Kogen officially closed in 2006

  • This ski area was owned and operated by the Prince Group and, as with other ski areas they owned, after closing the lifts and facilities were removed and the mountain returned to nature

  • On 21st January 2018 there was a one-night only special event held at the old ski area. It was called a 'revival' of the night time skiing experience - a fond look back. There was lighting, sledding, music, food and drink. Participants were asked to turn up in ski wear - though there was no actual skiing or snowboarding!
