Kawaguchi was a ski area located to south-east of the central area of what used to be Kawaguchi Town in Niigata Prefecture. Kawaguchi is now part of Nagaoka City. The 500m long course was serviced by one single lift. There remains little evidence of there ever being a ski area on this hill.

  • The epicentre of the magnitude 6.8 Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake  新潟県中越地震  of 23rd October 2004 was directly below Kawaguchi Town
    　
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency uses a seismic scale called shindo  震度  to measure the degree of shaking during an earthquake. The set of numbers ranges from 0 to 7 and the shaking become greater as the number increases. Shindo 5 and 6 are both further divided into lower and upper levels. At maximum 7, people cannot stay standing while unsecured pieces of furniture are likely to topple over and reinforced concrete walls may collapse
