Nagawa Town, Nagano Prefecture

姫木平スキー場　長野県長和町

Himekidaira was a ski area located in what used to be Nagato Town, but is now part of Nagawa Town in the central region of Nagano Prefecture. It was surrounded by holiday homes and accommodation. This ski area opened in 1976, a few years before the larger Echo Valley Ski Area opened close-by. It closed in 1998.

  • Himekidaira Ski Area was located within the Himekidaira Besso-chi villa and holiday home area  姫木平別荘地
    　
  • An aerial photograph from 1976, the year the ski area opened, seems to show only one lift (the shorter one)
    　
  • At that time there were no villas yet on the west side of the ski area
    　
  • There is conflicting information about that first original lift
    　
  • It was either a T-bar or single lift (there is a possibility that it was originally a T-bar lift and subsequently changed to a single lift)
    　
  • The area continued to be developed and eventually the ski area was surrounded on all sides by villas and pensions
    　
  • The second lift had a mid-point for alighting
    　
  • At one point the ski area featured a half pipe
    　
  • The base of the larger Echo Valley Ski Area  エコーバレースキー場  is about 1km from Himekidaira
    　

  • Echo Valley  opened in 1981, initially with 4 single lifts
    　

  • Nagato Town  長門町  merged with Wada Village  和田村  to became part of Nagawa Town  長和町  in October 2005
    　
  • A Tree Planting Festival was held at this location in 2009  平成21年植樹祭
    　
  • The ski lifts and facilities have been removed
    　
  • Only what look like old concrete foundations at the top of the shorter lift remain
    　
  • The old ski slope is now a well-kept park area
