Akagisan Dai 3

Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture

赤城山第3スキー場 群馬県前橋市

Akagisan Dai 3 was a small local ski area located to the south of Lake Onuma in Maebashi City in Gunma Prefecture. It was one of three ski hills by the lake - the others being Akagisan Dai 1 and Akagisan Dai 2. Only the nearby Akagisan Dai 1 remains open today, though it is much smaller than it used to be. These were the only ski areas operating within the boundaries of Maebashi City.

Further Information

  • Mount Akagi, known in Japanese as Akagisan or Akagiyama, is a stratovolcano located to the north of central Maebashi City

  • The name is of one large volcanic body - there is no peak called Akagi

  • Akagisan 'Dai 2' basically means Akagisan 'Number 2'

  • When this ski area was open the area was part of Fujimi Village  富士見村

  • The gentle slopes are now popular for sledding in winter

  • There was at one time an 80m rope tow lift

  • It cost 100 yen for one ride; 1,500 yen for a day

  • One old guide book mentions a second rope tow lift, but that cannot be confirmed

  • There is an interesting story behind Akagisan Number 1 area - more information here

  • The Mt Akagi region is still popular for hiking, walking and sightseeing

  • Fujimi Village became part of Maebashi City in May 2009
