Shirakawago Hirase Onsen Shirayumi was a ski area in the northern region of Gifu Prefecture, close to the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakagawa-go. The ski area opened in 1969 and at one time had three ski lifts. In later years it has just one pair lift and due to ageing facilities and less people visiting it was open for the last time during the 2020-2021 winter season.

  • Shirakawago Hirase Onsen Shirayumi opened in 1969
    　
  • The ski area was about 11km to the south of Shirakawa-go 白川郷, the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site
    　
  • It was also just to the north of the Hirase Onsen 平瀬温泉 hot spring area, hence the name
    　
  • In the early years, there were three lifts at this ski area - one pair lift (520m) on the right side and two single lifts (550m and 600m) on the left side
    　
  • In later years there was only one 790m pair lift with a mid-station where you could alight
    　
  • That mid-station was close to the location of the top of the original pair lift
    　
  • It is unclear when the various lift configurations changed, but a 1994 guidebook shows the original three lifts, and a 2001 guidebook shows just one pair and one single lift
    　
  • At some point, the pair lift was replaced by the longer 790m pair lift
    　
  • At its most popular, in the 1994 season, there were 16,000 visitors
    　
  • In 2016 there were 1,715 visitors with a deficit of 11.8 million yen
    　
  • Since 2015 there had been various (unsuccessful) considerations about whether to continue due to ageing facilities
    　
  • On 28th December 2021, it was announced on the official website that the 2020-2021 season would be the last, and the ski area was closing
