Takayu Onsen was a ski area located less than 20km to the west of central Fukushima City, in the prefecture of the same name. The ski slopes at Takayu Onsen and the close-by Azuma were the only official runs available within the borders of Fukushima City. The area used to be a golf course, but it is now just an unused space close to the Takayu Onsen hot springs.

  • Takayu Onsen  高湯温泉  is the name of a hot spring located at an altitude of 750m, to the west of central Fukushima City
    　
  • The only skiing within the borders of Fukushima City used to be found around the accommodations of Takayu Onsen
    　
  • Azuma Ski Area (more information here) was the larger ski area, but there was also another ski area nearby known as Takayu Onsen
    　
  • In some places, it was known as just Takayu Gelande 高湯ゲレンデ or Takayu Golf-Jo Gelande 高湯ゴルフ場ゲレンデ and was included in pamphlets for Azuma
    　
  • The two ski areas were not physically connected and were separated by a walk of about 400m
    　
  • In later years of operation, the bottom pony lift and single ski lift at Azuma were closed, effectively cutting off access to Azuma from Takayu Onsen
    　
  • The origins of Takayu Onsen Ski Area are in 1955 when the Azuma Kogen Golf Club 吾妻高原ゴルフクラブ opened in an area just to the south of most of the accommodations in Takayu Onsen
