Gotemba Shiei

Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture

御殿場市営スキー場 静岡県御殿場市

Gotemba Skiei was a ski area about 5km southeast of the summit of Mount Fuji in Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture. There was skiing at this location dating back to the early Showa Era, and it was initially known as Tarobo Ski Area. A single lift and other facilities opened in 1975, and about 200,000 skiers used the ski area in one year. After several avalanches and unreliable snowfall, the ski area closed in 1990, and the lift was removed in 1993.

Further Information

  • Gotemba Shiei Ski Area was located close to the Gotemba Trail New 5th Station 富士山五合目 on the southeast side of Mount Fuji 富士山

  • The Gotemba Trail walking route, leading to the summit of Mt Fuji, starts from this point

  • On maps, the ski area was just over 5km from the summit of Mount Fuji

  • It was initially known as Tarobo Ski Area 太郎坊スキー場 after the name of the local neighbourhood

  • There was skiing at this location dating back to the early Showa Era (1926–89), but the single lift opened in 1975

  • That seems to be when the name changed to Gotemba Shiei Ski Area 御殿場市営スキー場

  • As the name implies, it was operated by Gotemba City 御殿場市

  • The ski lift was opened during summer for sightseeing and hiking

  • The base of the ski lift was several hundred metres from the Gotemba Trail 5th Station car parks and just south of Oishi Chaya 大石茶屋 facility

  • At one time there were probably also two surface T-bar lifts between the car parks and the ski lift (not 100% confirmed)

  • The 'catchphrase' of the ski area was 「東海唯一の天然雪」, which means 'Tokai's only (ski area with) natural snow'

  • The amount of snowfall that the ski area received was somewhat unreliable and varied greatly every year

  • In 1986 the ski lift was able to open for 63 days and attracted around 200,000 visitors

  • In 1988 it was only able to open for 2 days due to a lack of snow

  • The ski area facilities were damaged several times due to avalanches, notably in 1981, 1983 and 1990

  • The ski area closed in 1990

  • The ski lift and ski area facilities were removed in 1993

  • One more name variation: in some guidebooks, this ski area also appears to have been known as Fuji Gotenba Ski Area 富士御殿場スキー場

  • There are now two ski areas operating around the foothills of Mount Fuji:

  • Snow Park Yeti in Shizuoka Prefecture

  • Fujiten Snow Resort in Yamanashi Prefecture
