Further Information

  • Sado Island  佐渡島  is an island off the coast of Niigata Prefecture

  • Until 2017 there were two ski areas on Sado, Daira 平スキー場 and Wonder Valley Sado

  • Wonder Valley Sado opened in 1987 and was privately owned

  • The owner started it with the investment of 15 friends and worked on the construction of the lodge and slope maintenance himself

  • The ski area had 4 simple rope tow style lifts (known as 'hanger lifts') at one time, as well as a rope tow for sleds

  • The easterly facing slopes overlooked Ryotsu Bay  両津湾

  • Floodlit night skiing was popular with locals

  • At its most popular, about 2000 people visited in a season

  • Outside of the winter season, it was used as a golf practice area and for horseback riding experiences

  • Unfortunately, as the population of Sado decreased, so did the number of visitors to the ski area

  • In addition to that, the city-operated Daira benefitted from tax-funded investment in a brand new pair ski lift and renovated base lodge for the 2017-2018 season

  • Due to these issues, the owner of Wonder Valley Sado made the decision to close in 2017
