Further Information

  • Matsugamine Ski Area was almost exactly on the current border of Joetsu City 上越市 and Myoko City 妙高市

  • The location used to be part of Nakago Village 中郷村, before it merged with Joetsu City in 2005

  • The only official listing of Matsugamine Ski Area that can be found is in a Myoko Kogen ski area guidebook from 1975

  • That guidebook says there was one 300m ski 'lift'

  • The type of lift is unconfirmed, but as it was referred to as a 'lift' rather than a rope tow, it was likely a single lift

  • The ski lift can be seen in the aerial photograph from 1976 (above)

  • The lift cost 40 yen for one ride, 200 yen for 6 rides and 400 yen for 13 rides

  • There was just one gentle slope, suitable for beginners and apparently popular with 'families with young children'

  • There was ski and boot rental and five places to either rest or get something to eat or drink

  • Courses of the private Myoko Sunshine Golf Club  妙高サンシャインゴルフ倶楽部  can now be found at this location

  • (The photos above were taken from the public road by the side of the golf course - not the exact location of the old ski slope)

  • It is unclear when Matsugamine ski area closed, but the golf club can be seen in an aerial image from 1989

  • The nearby Myoko Sunshineland amusement park  妙高サンシャインランド  also opened in 1989

  • Matsugamine Onsen hot springs  松ヶ峯温泉  and various accommodations are nearby
