Golf Gelande

Yamanouchi Town, Shiga Kogen, Nagano Prefecture

ゴルフ場ゲレンデ 長野県山ノ内町志賀高原

Golf Gelende was - possibly! - the name of a small ski area located in the Shiga Kogen region of Yamanouchi Town in northern region of Nagano Prefecture. The ski lift was only in place from 1960 until 1973, in a location close to Maruike and behind the Shiga Kogen Sougoukaikan 98 facility. According to a Shiga Kogen source, this was more of a simple ski practice area than a proper ‘ski area’. Still, it deserved to be remembered!

Further Information

  • There is so little information available about this area that even the name is unclear!

  • Old records show that the lift was called  ゴルフ場リフト  which translates at 'golf area lift'

  • There was also mention in a guide book of the area being called  ゴルフスキー場  which translates as 'golf ski area'

  • Elsewhere it was noted as  ゴルフゲレンデ  (golf gelande) which perhaps seems the best one to use in English

  • If anyone knows any different, please get in touch!

  • The lower area of the lift was where the Shiga Kogen History Museum  志賀高原歴史記念館  is now located, just by the side of Route 292 near Maruike

  • That building used to be the entrance of Shiga Kogen Hotel  志賀高原ホテル  which was originally built in 1937

  • Other parts of the old hotel have now been demolished

  • The ski lift went from by the side of the hotel to what is now the back area of the car park behind Shiga Kogen Sougoukaikan 98  志賀高原総合会館98

  • Apparently there was some kind of simple golf or putting course by the hotel in the summer months, and in the winter... this small ski area

  • So that's where the somewhat awkward golf-related name is coming from

  • The 266m ski lift only lasted from 1960 until 1973

  • Shiga Kogen Sougoukaikan 98 opened in 1998, the year of the Nagano Winter Olympics

  • Sougoukaikan means 'General Hall'

  • The building houses various facilities including the Shiga Kogen Tourist Association  志賀高原観光協会  as well as meeting rooms and a large hall
