Wada Toge

Wada Toge was a ski area located in what used to be Wada Village but is now part of Nagawa Town, in the central region of Nagano Prefecture. The slopes can be found in the region to the south-east of Matsumoto city and to the north-east of Suwa City and Chino City. Wada Toge is located along one of Japans ancient highways, the Nakasendo ('Central Mountain Route'). Thousands of trees have been planted on the old ski slopes since Wada Toge closed in 1998.

  • When Wada Toge was operating it was located in Wada Village  和田村
    　
  • Wada Village became part of Nagawa Town in October 2015
    　
  • At one time Wada Toge Ski Area was known asWada Toge Kokusetsu Ski Area  和田峠国設スキー場
    　
  • The base area was by the popular Venus Line sightseeing road, close to where it intersects with Route 142
    　
  • The Venus Line is closed during the winter months, so access to the ski area was via Route 142
    　
  • The ski lift has been removed and all that remains are some concrete foundations
    　
  • The base building is still there, complete with sign showing the name of the ski area and the names of two ski schools (和田峠スキー学校 & 美ヶ原スキー学校）
    　
  • Since May 2011, with the co-operation of Nagawa Town a group started to plant young trees across the old ski area
    　
  • By 2014 about 13,000 trees had been planted, including 7,300 larch
    　
  • A large part of the ski area (and most of the lower area) has now been covered in fast-growing trees
    　
  • The Nakasendo  中山道  was one of the five routes of the Edo period and connected Tokyo - then known as Edo - to Kyoto
    　
  • The route remains very popular with walkers
    　
  • A Japanese language information board about the Nakasendo can be found in the upper area of the ski area
