Moriyoshi was a ski area located on the north-western slopes of Mt Moriyoshi in the northern region of Akita Prefecture. In 2005, Moriyoshi town merged with three other neighbouring towns to form Kita Akita City. When Moriyoshi first opened there were plans to connect it with the nearby Ani on same mountain to make a larger ski resort. Those planned developments faced some strong opposition. Moriyoshi closed in 2006, but Ani changed ownership and remains in operation today.

  • At 2,186m in length, the quad lift going from base to summit was the longest quad lift in Japan
    　
  • Moriyoshi was a Prince Group ski resort
    　
  • Ani 阿仁スキー場 is located nearby on the southern western slopes of the same mountain and was also owned and operated by the same company
    　
  • While the upper areas of Moriyoshi and Ani were close, the journey from base to base is about 40km by road
    　
  • At one time there were plans to connect the two ski areas via a gondola/lifts going to the top of Mt Moriyoshi
    　
  • There was strong opposition to that idea from environmentalist groups and as such the idea got no further than plans
    　
  • The two resorts may not have been lift and course connected, but at one time they did share a lift ticket
    　
  • Moriyoshi closed in 2006 but Ani changed hands and continues to operate in 2020
    　
  • As with other former Prince Group resorts, once the lifts were removed the mountain was returned to nature
    　
  • 43,000 larch trees were planted on the lower areas
